The main centres are Dewsbury in the north and Huddersfield in the south. The population of Kirklees is around 390,000. There are pockets of high deprivation as well as more affluent areas. In the Index of Multiple Deprivation 2004, Kirklees is ranked 77th overall, 21st on income and 16th on employment indicators (out of 355 local authorities, where 1=highest level of deprivation). The Kirklees Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy 2003 states that there are over 100,000 income deprived Kirklees residents, including 30,000 children. 14.4 % of the population are from the ethnic minorities, with the largest groups being Pakistani (6.8%), Indian (4.1%) and Black Caribbean (1.1%).
